Suicides & Assist Police Calls at UBC Vancouver

We’re releasing statistics on suicides on campus and assist-police calls recorded by UBC Campus Security (Vancouver). We were originally waiting for a federal RCMP Access to Information request to be completed to give a bigger picture of crime and mental health calls throughout the University Endowment Lands, in addition to UBC, but it is now several months overdue.

From January 1st, 2015 to December 22, 2016, there was 1 completed suicide, and 17 attempted suicides on campus at UBC Point Grey.

We originally requested statistics on welfare and mental health checks, but they are covered under the less precise category of assist police. There were 362 assist-police Calls from January 1st, 2015 to December 22, 2016.

These numbers only include incidents that happened on UBC Campus, including the UBC residences. This does not include incidents off-campus, including from Greater Vancouver (Vancouver/Burnaby/New West/Surrey/Richmond/etc), Wesbrook Village and much of the University Endowment Lands, where University RCMP holds jurisdiction and responsibility for policing.
